Why it stands out
The 2020 Kia Soul stands out because it blends the utility of a small SUV with the efficiency and driving refinement of a compact car. Its compact, boxy styling gives it a distinctive look, and that shape helps it deliver form and function in equal measure. It is also unusual in how it fits into the market, since it can be compared with small hatchbacks and subcompact SUVs alike.
For buyers, the Soul’s appeal comes from its spaciousness and easy-to-use technology, along with a lower starting price than most of its competitors. The car’s latest redesign gives it a more futuristic appearance, which adds to its personality and helps it feel modern and distinctive. At the same time, it is not without compromises: advanced safety features are not standard, and its performance is fairly pedestrian.

It has most of the features that I want in a car. Just missing the push start button.

The car handles great (a lot better than expected) and the gas millage is very good. The pick up with the CVT transmission is very good (again better than expected). The only complaint i have is that the drivers seat bottom doesnt tilt. It gets a little uncomfortable after an hour of sitting. The gas millage is 34.5 mpg average according to the computer, Ill verify that at the time of filling up. If the computer is accurate, the millage is very good considering my trip to work is very hilly.

This is the perfect car for us to pull behind our motorhome. Plus it’s extremely cute and fun to drive. Surprisingly it does not feel cramped. So far we love it.

With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable, with praise for its trouble-free ownership experience, gas mileage, and overall value. The expert evaluation also describes the Soul as refined and relatively quiet under acceleration, which supports the impression of an easy-to-live-with daily driver.
The cost-effectiveness discussion reinforces that this model delivers useful space and efficiency without asking you to overpay for a small SUV. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Kia Soul?
At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear, since those can reveal how well the car was repaired and maintained.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LX is pretty basic, with 16-inch steel wheels, manual front-seat adjustments, one USB input, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows, and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The S adds alloy wheels, body-color mirrors, premium cloth seats, remote keyless entry, and more driver-assistance features, while the EX adds heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, push-button start, and a larger 10.25-inch screen.
- Powertrain: Most trims use a 2-liter four-cylinder with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT. The base LX can also be had with a 6-speed manual. The GT-Line Turbo uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
- Safety package: The S trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection. The X-Line loses forward-collision warning, while the EX brings it back. The GT-Line Turbo adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection.
- Infotainment: All trims get Kia’s UVO system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The LX, S, X-Line, and GT-Line use a 7-inch screen, while the EX and GT Turbo get a 10.25-inch screen.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2-liter engine with automatic transmission returns 27 mpg city, 33 highway, and 30 combined. The base LX with a manual returns 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined. The Turbo returns 27 city, 32 highway, and 29 combined.
Which 2020 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2020 Kia Soul is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, S, X-Line, EX, GT-Line, and GT-Line Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the least expensive way into the Soul, and it gives you the basics plus a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the extra convenience and safety features found higher up.
- S: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, premium cloth seats, and a strong set of driver-assistance features, making it the smartest balance of price and equipment.
- X-Line: This trim adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, body cladding, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. It suits you if you want a more adventurous look, but it gives up forward-collision warning.
- EX: This is the comfort-focused upgrade, with heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and the larger 10.25-inch screen. It’s a good pick if you value convenience and tech over the lowest possible price.
- GT-Line: This trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels and unique exterior styling. It’s the choice if you want a sportier appearance without stepping all the way up to the turbo model.
- GT-Line Turbo: This is the most powerful and best-equipped version, with the turbo engine, upgraded interior details, premium audio, and added safety tech. It’s the right pick if you want the most performance and features.
The safety package starts with the S trim, but the X-Line loses forward-collision warning, so that’s an important trim-level gap to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,478 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.08% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,644.38, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $12,644 sits slightly below last year's $13,754.
That price movement suggests the Soul has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to move if you price it competitively later. For a future seller, the current softness means you may not get the same return you would have a year ago, especially if your car has higher mileage or visible wear.
On the other hand, the model’s value-focused reputation and broad appeal can help support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Kia Soul safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include front- and side-impact airbags, a reversing camera, traction control, hill-start assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The S trim adds forward-collision warning and avoidance, lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-path detection. The X-Line loses forward-collision warning, while the GT-Line Turbo adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and pedestrian detection.
A key caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, so trim choice matters a lot if safety tech is a priority.
Should I buy a 2020 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.08% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 redesign gives the Soul a more futuristic look and a stronger mix of utility and refinement.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $13,853, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $12,644 average.
- It adds a standard rear occupant alert and updated suspension configurations for the X-Line and GT-Line trims.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the stronger buy because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly updated version, the 2021 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020 and shop for a clean, well-equipped S or EX.
