Along with the redesign of the standard Hyundai Veloster for 2019 came the debut of the high-performance Veloster N. It carries over mostly unchanged for 2020. The Veloster N competes with the Volkswagen GTI and Honda Civic Si. The Veloster N looks the part of the high-performance halo car, with an eye-catching 3-door hatchback profile, an enlarged grille, a hatch spoiler, side skirts, and red accents. While most Velosters get a single center exhaust outlet, the Veloster N’s tips are positioned at the sides. This year, the Veloster N’s flat black exterior accents change to gloss black. The Veloster N boasts 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Like the rest of the Veloster line, it’s front-wheel drive (FWD). Only a 6-speed manual transmission is offered. With the optional Performance Package, you enjoy an upgrade to 275 hp plus a limited-slip differential. An electronically controlled suspension system enhances handling. Upgraded brakes are available. The Veloster N’s fuel-economy ratings come in at 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined. The Veloster N comes with the latest version of Hyundai’s infotainment suite and an updated touchscreen. The standard infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Standard cargo tie-down hooks are new for this year. The Veloster N is not tested separately for safety, though the 2019 Veloster was awarded Good scores in all of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests it completed. Standard safety features include a reversing camera with dynamic guidelines and brake assist. The Veloster N is a true performance bargain in its segment and should be carefully evaluated by shoppers who are interested in a sporty compact car.
