The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell is just one of a few hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles offered in parts of Southern California. For 2020, it gets some light updates, starting with a new color palette.

The Clarity Fuel Cell makes use of an AC electric motor, lithium-ion battery, and membrane fuel cell for 174 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Newly improved cold-weather startup performance means that it can operate at temperatures as low as -22 degrees Fahrenheit. As far as fuel economy goes, you can expect 68 miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe) and a maximum range of 360 miles between refuels. Like all fuel-cell vehicles, the Clarity Fuel Cell emits no emissions.

Standard equipment for the Clarity Fuel Cell includes seating for five, LED headlights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, LED headlights, leather upholstery, premium audio, navigation, an electronic parking brake, and keyless access and start. It offers no available options.

Also included on every Clarity Fuel Cell are a side camera, a rear-view camera, and the Honda Sensing safety suite. That last feature bundles forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, road-departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, and traffic-sign recognition. As it’s so rare, the Clarity Fuel Cell has not been evaluated for safety by any major outside agency.

As in previous years, Honda offers the Clarity Fuel Cell solely on a 36-month lease to select Southern California markets. To help you along, the lease includes $15,000 in hydrogen fuel-cell use.
