CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Honda Civic
overall

Summary
With 2,734 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,721, 30.7% of 2020 Honda Civic listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Honda Civic 4.9 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
53.8% of 2020 Honda Civic listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Honda Civic stands out as one of the best small cars you can buy, and its appeal starts with how much it offers for the money. It combines the performance and quality of more expensive cars with the value and longevity expected of a Honda, which helps explain why it continues to outperform many of its small-car peers. It also gives buyers multiple body styles and multiple powertrain options, making it easy to find a version that fits different needs.
For the 2020 model year, the Civic gets minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions. Those updates help keep it fresh without changing its basic formula. The main drawback is outdated technology, so while the Civic remains a strong all-around choice, shoppers who prioritize the latest infotainment and connectivity features may notice that shortcoming.

Car drives really smooth, a great upgrade from my 2010 Kia Forte Koup. Everything in the car works great (was told most Hondas have AC issues but haven't had any issues with mine so far) highly recommend

I love this car. I just hope that future models will have blind spot on both passenger and drivers side. Otherwise, I think the car is near perfection. Great value for all it has to offer. The heated seats are a plus is cold weather.

How much does the 2020 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,699 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,330 |
| Year-Round High | $19,839 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,841 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.76% |
Prices have softened 5.76% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,632 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for you to compare trims and prices.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Honda Civic earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great fuel economy, and fun driving experience. They also highlight the stylish design, tech features, and safety advancements. On the downside, the Civic’s outdated technology and limited USB ports are recurring trade-offs, and the overview also points to a desire for a bit more power.
For you, that means this Civic makes the most sense if you want a value-focused compact car that still feels polished and enjoyable to live with. The market also shows 30.5% good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully rather than rushing.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary describes the Civic as reliable and affordable, and it also emphasizes that many drivers see it as a car they can count on. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the powertrains as smooth and the overall package as polished and well-executed.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to strong value, which matters for ownership confidence because a car that delivers a lot for the money often feels easier to keep long term. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the Civic’s core durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Honda Civic?
At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Focus on the condition of the interior tech and convenience features too, since outdated technology is one of the Civic’s known drawbacks. If you’re comparing multiple listings, give extra weight to cars with cleaner histories and better-documented maintenance.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Civic comes in sedan, coupe, and 4-door hatchback body styles, and the base LX is the most stripped-down version because it lacks the standard 7-inch touchscreen found on most other trims. Higher trims add more convenience and comfort features, while the Si and Touring variants bring more equipment and a more premium feel.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 158 horsepower and a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 with 174 horsepower, plus higher-output Si and Type R versions. The 1.5-liter engine is the better pick if you want stronger mid-range response and more satisfying everyday acceleration.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. It is standard on Si models and appears across the Civic lineup, but the Type R was not tested in the IIHS evaluation.
- Infotainment: Most trims get a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the base LX does not. The system is dated and slower than newer Honda setups, so you should test it carefully before buying.
- Fuel efficiency: The Si is rated at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined, while the base LX sedan is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. Most CVT-equipped Civic models reach at least 30 mpg city and as high as 42 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2020 Honda Civic is offered in 3 trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, but it is the least appealing if you care about convenience because it is the only trim without the standard 7-inch touchscreen. It makes sense if your priority is the lowest possible buy-in and you can live with the most basic equipment.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more of the Civic’s desirable everyday appeal without pushing you into the pricier upper trims. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, this is the one to focus on first.
- EX: This is the better choice if you want the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and more upscale equipment. It suits you best if you value stronger passing power and a more polished daily-driving experience.
Honda Sensing is standard on Si models and includes active lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and auto high beams.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Honda Civic?
The market looks moderate and selective, so you have room to shop, but the better listings can still move quickly.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,632 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,330, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $18,699 sits slightly below last year's $19,841.
That softer pricing suggests the Civic has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For you, that means a well-bought Civic should have a better chance of holding value than a car that is still in a steep decline phase. The model’s broad appeal and strong reputation also help keep demand steady in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Honda Civic safe?
The 2020 Honda Civic earns Top Safety Pick from IIHS and five-star ratings in all NHTSA categories except the coupe’s passenger frontal crash rating, which is four-star.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning, emergency forward braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Honda also improved the optional LED headlights enough to help secure the IIHS result across all body styles except the Type R, which was not tested. The one caveat to keep in mind is the coupe’s lower passenger frontal crash rating from NHTSA.
Should I buy a 2020 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Minor design tweaks, more standard safety and convenience features, and more manual transmissions define this model year.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,449, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $18,699 average.
- It offers a polished, value-focused driving experience with broad body-style and powertrain variety.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,494, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,699 average.
- It is the outgoing generation and appeals to shoppers who want the last version before the redesign.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and variety, the 2020 is the strongest all-around pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the final-year version of this generation.
