overall

Summary
With 6,351 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,532, 31.0% of 2020 GMC Sierras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out because it blends pickup utility with the kind of comfort many shoppers now expect from SUVs and crossovers. That makes it feel less like a bare-bones work truck and more like a truck designed to fit into everyday life. The AT4 trim is described as comfortable but also capable, which gives the Sierra a broader appeal than a purely jobsite-focused pickup.
It also benefits from the broader evolution of modern trucks, with utility-minded touches such as cargo-management tools, side steps, and bed steps making it more useful. The truck’s powertrain lineup is another strength, since it offers multiple powertrain options, and its technology is easy to use. At the same time, advanced safety features are not standard, which is an important limitation for buyers to keep in mind.

Absolutely stunning vehicle. Pure luxury pick-up truck. Serious power, w/a 6.2L V8 engine; smooth, wonderful ride, lots of driver convenience & safety features; comfortable seating, roomy cab interior....I could go on. GMC has left nothing out of their Sierra Denali line. Beautiful truck - everyone Ive talked to feels the same. Commanding presence on the road. Tops Dodge Ram & Ford models, in my opinion. I have a 2020 model. The 2023 model tops even THAT!!!

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?
Generally — the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns 4.28/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from expert testing. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, advanced technology, strong performance, smooth ride, and the variety of available options. The Sierra also fits buyers who want a truck that feels more like part of everyday life than a bare-bones work vehicle, especially if you value comfort alongside utility.
The trade-offs are that some drivers report engine-related frustrations, including oil burning and recalls, and the interior design gets mixed feedback. Expert testing also notes that the truck can get pricey in higher trims and that the AT4’s off-road setup is less road-friendly than softer-riding versions.
The Sierra’s broad appeal comes from its mix of pickup utility and SUV-like comfort, with the AT4 adding a more capable, weekend-ready personality. Even so, the market still shows 29.6% good or great deals, so you can shop with some leverage.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.28/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a truck that many people find dependable over time, with praise for its strong performance, comfort, and useful features. That said, some owners mention engine concerns, including oil burning and recalls, which is worth taking seriously if you plan to keep the truck for the long haul.
Expert testing also emphasizes that the Sierra’s powertrain lineup is broad and that the truck is built around practical, everyday use. The cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that GMC understands how buyers actually use these trucks, especially for commuting, hauling, and weekend duty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid a truck with unresolved engine or recall-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, because accident-free status does not tell you everything about prior use or maintenance. A careful inspection should focus on wear, signs of hard use, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the trim level and price. If you’re shopping a higher-mileage example, pay extra attention to condition, service records, and any signs that the truck has been used for heavy towing or off-road driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim comes with a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and LED “light blade” headlights. The SLE adds an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry. The Elevation brings body-color exterior details, 20-inch wheels, black accents, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel. The SLT adds many of those comforts with more classic chrome styling. The AT4 is the off-road-oriented version with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, black leather with brown accents, skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, and Rancho off-road shocks. The Denali adds chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging.
- Powertrain: The Sierra offers five engines: a 4.3-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque, a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 310 hp and 348 lb-ft, a Duramax 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft, a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft, and a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. Every engine uses an automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive or available 4WD. The 4WD system includes 4-high, 4-low, 2WD, and auto modes.
- Safety package: Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror. Some of these features are available rather than standard, so check the exact equipment on the truck you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The Base trim has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SLE upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen and adds a WiFi hotspot. The system is described as straightforward, with clear graphics, large icons, sensible menus, and tactile controls for radio and climate functions. The AT4 also includes a head-up display, wireless charging, and multiple USB ports and outlets.
- Fuel efficiency: The AT4 returns 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. The most efficient version is the Duramax turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive at 23/30/26, followed by the 2.7-liter turbo at 20/23/21 and the 5.3-liter V8 with rear-wheel drive at 17/24/20.
Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, AT4.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials without much flash. You get the V6, the 7-inch touchscreen, smartphone integration, Bluetooth, and LED headlights, so it covers the basics well if you want the lowest-cost path into the Sierra lineup.
- SLE: This is the trim that adds meaningful everyday convenience, including an 8-inch touchscreen, a WiFi hotspot, remote keyless entry, and an extra USB port. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more complete truck without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Elevation: This trim is for you if you want a more distinctive look and more comfort features. It adds body-color styling, 20-inch wheels, heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel.
- SLT: This is the smart step-up if you want a more road-friendly setup with many of the nicer features found higher up the range. It keeps the upscale feel but is described as the better choice if you want a more compliant ride than the AT4.
- Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless charging. It makes sense if you want the most premium Sierra experience.
- AT4: This is the pick if you want the most rugged personality. It adds off-road hardware like all-terrain tires, skid plates, upgraded suspension, hill-descent control, and Rancho shocks, while still feeling upscale inside.
The safety package includes a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, while several driver-assistance features remain available rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?
The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,355 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.94% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,497, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $33,497 sits slightly below last year's $36,387.
That price movement suggests the Sierra has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price now and keep the truck in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.
The current trend also shows that buyers have become a bit more price-sensitive, so resale will likely depend on trim, mileage, condition, and equipment. Trucks with desirable features and clean histories should remain easier to move than stripped or heavily worn examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.28/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror.
One important caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you’ll want to confirm exactly what’s fitted on the truck you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends pickup utility with SUV-like comfort and adds useful cargo-management touches.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,268, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $33,497 average.
- It’s a thoroughly redesigned full-size pickup aimed squarely at half-ton truck shoppers.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,210, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $33,497 average.
- It adds unique features like an optional carbon-fiber composite cargo bed.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, comfort, and broad capability, the 2020 is the sensible middle ground. If your priority is saving money, the 2019 is the better value play. If you want a newer truck and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the step-up to consider.
