Summary
With 6,271 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,518.00, 30.3% of 2020 GMC Sierras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out because it reflects how far pickup trucks have come. Rather than feeling like a bare-bones work vehicle, it offers many of the creature comforts buyers now expect from SUVs and crossovers, while still keeping the utility-minded features that make modern trucks more useful. The AT4 trim in particular is described as comfortable and capable, which gives it a broader appeal than a truck focused only on job-site duty.
It also has practical strengths that matter to shoppers comparing full-size pickups. The available powertrain choices are a plus, and the truck’s technology is noted for being easy to use. At the same time, it is not presented as perfect: advanced safety features are not standard, so buyers who want the most comprehensive driver-assistance equipment may need to look carefully at how it is equipped. Overall, the 2020 Sierra 1500 is distinctive for blending everyday comfort, capability, and modern truck convenience in a way that suits both commuting and work.

Absolutely stunning vehicle. Pure luxury pick-up truck. Serious power, w/a 6.2L V8 engine; smooth, wonderful ride, lots of driver convenience & safety features; comfortable seating, roomy cab interior....I could go on. GMC has left nothing out of their Sierra Denali line. Beautiful truck - everyone Ive talked to feels the same. Commanding presence on the road. Tops Dodge Ram & Ford models, in my opinion. I have a 2020 model. The 2023 model tops even THAT!!!

Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?
Generally — the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 earns 4.28/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from experts. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, advanced technology, strong performance, smooth ride, and the range of available options. That lines up with the truck’s broader appeal as a pickup that can feel more like an SUV or crossover in daily use.
The main trade-offs are that some drivers mention engine-related frustrations, including oil burning and recalls, and the interior design gets mixed feedback. The overview also frames it as a truck that blends comfort and capability, which makes it especially appealing if you want utility without giving up everyday livability.
With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have enough market choice to be selective.
Is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.28/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a truck that many people find satisfying over time thanks to its spacious cabin, strong performance, and useful technology.
The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing straightforward controls and a truck that is easy to live with day to day. The cost-effectiveness commentary also frames it as a truck built for real-world use, which supports the idea that it can be a practical long-term ownership choice.
Still, some owners report engine-related issues and recalls, so used buyers should pay close attention to maintenance records and any open recall work before committing.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 GMC Sierra 1500?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for accident damage, unresolved recalls, and signs of heavy use. Because some owners mention engine concerns, it is especially smart to focus on service records and how the truck has been maintained.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base truck comes with a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and LED “light blade” headlights. Higher trims add features such as an 8-inch touchscreen, WiFi hotspot, remote keyless entry, heated front seats, remote engine start, a heated steering wheel, and more upscale styling. The AT4 adds all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, black leather with brown accents, and an off-road-oriented setup, while the Denali adds chrome accents, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging.
- Powertrain: You have five engine choices, starting with a 4.3-liter V6, then a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a Duramax turbodiesel 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, a 5.3-liter V8, and a 6.2-liter V8. The 10-speed automatic and available 4WD are part of the setup, and the diesel is the most efficient version mentioned.
- Safety package: Standard safety features include a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of front- and side-impact airbags. Available driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and the rear camera mirror. Advanced safety features are not standard.
- Infotainment: The Base truck has a 7-inch touchscreen, while the SLE moves to an 8-inch touchscreen. The system is described as easy to use, with clear graphics, large icons, sensible menus, and tactile controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the Base, and the truck also offers wireless charging and multiple USB ports and outlets on higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The AT4 returns 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined. The 2.7-liter turbo returns 20/23/21, the Duramax turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive returns 23/30/26, and the most efficient V8 is the 5.3-liter with rear-wheel drive at 17/24/20.
Which 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, Elevation, SLT, Denali, AT4.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a V6 engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, a USB port, and LED headlights. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sierra lineup and can live without the extra convenience and comfort features found higher up.
- SLE: This trim adds an extra USB port, a WiFi hotspot, an 8-inch touchscreen, and remote keyless entry, plus access to more option packages. It is the best-value trim if you want a more modern daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Elevation: This one brings a distinct look with body-color bumpers, door handles, and grille surround, plus 20-inch wheels and black accents. Inside, you get heated front seats, remote engine start, and a heated steering wheel, making it a strong pick if style and comfort matter together.
- SLT: CarGurus recommends this trim. It keeps many of the comfort features you want while adding a more road-friendly setup with more compliant tires and suspension, which makes it the smart choice if you want a well-equipped truck that is easier to live with every day.
- Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice, with plenty of chrome, 22-inch wheels, a head-up display, navigation, and wireless device charging. Choose it if you want the most upscale Sierra experience.
- AT4: This is the off-road-oriented version, with all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, beefed-up skid plates, upgraded suspension components, hill-descent control, and Rancho off-road shocks. It suits you best if you want capability and a more rugged personality, though the ride is rougher on pavement.
Advanced safety features are not standard, so check carefully how each trim is equipped if driver assistance matters to you.

What is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

That softer pricing can help you buy more truck for the money now, but it also means future resale values may not be as strong as they were a year ago. If you plan to sell later, the current market suggests you should pay close attention to trim, condition, and equipment because those factors will matter more when demand is softer.

Should I buy a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends comfort, capability, and easy-to-use technology in a way that suits commuting and work.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $31,364, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $33,508 average.
- It is a redesigned full-size pickup with a more polished, more capable feel.
