The Chevrolet Sonic, offered as both a hatchback and a sedan, occupies the same subcompact segment as the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, and Toyota Yaris. It continues into 2020 relatively unchanged.

The sole engine for the Sonic is a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder, good for 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. The standard 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to just the front wheels. You can expect fuel economy of 26 mpg city, 34 highway, and 29 combined.

The Sonic benefits from a simple lineup that includes the LS, LT, and Premier trims. The LS, which is available for only the sedan body style, comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, projector-beam headlights, 4G LTE WiFi hotspot capability, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Bluetooth streaming. The LT trim tacks on heated power-adjustable mirrors, 15-inch painted alloy wheels, power windows, cruise control, and premium cloth. Upgrading to the Premier trim gets you 17-inch painted alloy wheels, keyless open and start, perforated leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, and a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. With the rear seats up, the hatchback delivers 19 cubic feet of cargo space. With the rear seats folded, cargo space expands to 47.7 cubic feet. The sedan offers 14.9 cubic feet.

Chevrolet gives every Sonic a reversing camera. You’ll have to pony up for any other safety options like rear parking sensors, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. The Sonic achieved Good scores in its latest round of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash testing. The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) gave the Sonic a 5-star overall rating.
