CarGurus Analysis: 2020 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 1,170 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,419, 34.4% of 2020 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
68.7% of 2020 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans into BMW’s performance heritage, even as it has become more comfortable and less overtly sporty than older versions. In this generation, the regular 5 Series models are described as having softened a bit, with steering that is not as precise or engaging as it once was, but the car still offers more driving enjoyment than many of its staid competitors. It also comes with a strong safety roster, including blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams.
For 2020, the 5 Series lineup included the 530i, 540i, 530e, 540d, and M550i xDrive. The 530i used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The 530e plug-in hybrid gained a larger battery for 21 miles of all-electric range, and the M550i received 67 horsepower and 73 lb-ft of torque more than before, bringing it closer to M5 territory. That mix gives buyers a wide spread of choices, from efficiency to serious performance.
The 2020 model also benefits from the G30’s upscale cabin and technology, though BMW’s systems can be complex to learn. Most reviewers liked the design, but many noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not feel as engaging as earlier 5 Series models and that the car felt heavy. Even so, its blend of luxury, available performance, and a better reliability record than the earlier F10 generation makes it appealing to shoppers who want a premium sedan with real substance.

I was skeptical on the power of the M550 since Im coming from a boosted mustang, but the acceleration impresses me. Lots of cool features, too many if you ask me. Remote start is missing from the 2020 and older M550s.

How much does the 2020 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,417 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,757.60 |
| Year-Round High | $27,836.67 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,820 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.64% |
Prices have softened 8.64% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,166 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $24,757.60, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2020 BMW 5 Series earns a user rating of 5/5, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
The 2020 model leans more toward comfort than the sharper, older BMW feel, but it still offers more driving enjoyment than many competitors. It also gives you a broad range of powertrains and a well-equipped cabin, so you can match the car to your priorities whether you want efficiency, performance, or a more upscale daily driver.
With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is meaningful opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2020 5 Series also comes across as a well-equipped luxury sedan with standard driver-assistance features and a cabin that reviewers generally liked for comfort and equipment. At the same time, the overview notes that upkeep could still be costly, so reliability for you is as much about maintenance history as it is about the car’s basic design.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying for deferred maintenance on a premium sedan that can be expensive to keep in top shape.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or incomplete service records.
Focus your condition check on signs of uneven wear, warning lights, and evidence that the car’s luxury features and maintenance items have been kept up consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 5 Series?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they shop with discipline.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,166 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.64% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,757.60, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $25,417 sits slightly below last year's $27,820.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car well maintained, you can reduce the impact of further depreciation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,705, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $25,417 average.
- The 2021 adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a larger infotainment touchscreen.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with meaningful inventory and deal availability. If you are willing to pay more for a fresher-feeling cabin and updated tech, the 2021 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize newer features over price.
