overall

Summary
With 1,441 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,052.00, 33.0% of 2020 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 BMW 3 Series 4.14 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
71.8% of 2020 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 BMW 3 Series stands out as a sedan built for drivers who care as much about the experience behind the wheel as they do about everyday comfort. BMW’s own summary ties that appeal to the arrival of the 2020 BMW M340i, which sits between the existing 330i and the forthcoming M3, and says the company proves there is substance behind its “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan. That positioning helps explain why the 2020 3 Series is easy to shortlist: it is meant to deliver a more engaging drive without giving up the comfort expected in a premium sedan.
Its strengths are straightforward. BMW highlights that it is fun to drive, comfortable, and powered by a powerful engine. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a car that feels lively and polished at the same time. At the same time, the 2020 BMW 3 Series is not without drawbacks. BMW notes that its design may be polarizing and that it is poor value for money, so shoppers drawn to its driving character may still want to weigh styling and pricing carefully.

I have test driven only the M 340. It is excellent. I am currently driving an M240 convertible and if I was not a lover of the open sky would definitely trade this in. The power delivery is excellent and the interior is well appointed. I love the tactile feel. The steering wheel is a nice touch. The only criticism is that getting into the back can be a bit of a chore if you are over 6 feet.

Simply it seemed to me that the BMW 3 is great but being a big guy I find it a bit too small in the cabin. .

How much does the 2020 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,961 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,619.22 |
| Year-Round High | $25,850.17 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,651 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.59% |
Prices have softened 6.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,500 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $23,619.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Generally — the 2020 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.14/5 user rating, and our experts give it an 8.17/10 rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers repeatedly praise its performance, beautiful design, and comfortable interior. The M340 variant gets especially strong feedback for power and driving dynamics, which lines up with the car’s sporty positioning. The trade-offs are familiar: some shoppers find the cabin a bit cramped for taller occupants, and others mention interior noise and pricing concerns.
That fits the broader use case well: you’re looking at a premium sedan that prioritizes an engaging drive without giving up everyday comfort. With 33.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.14/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on the car’s long-term appeal and the ability to count on its performance and comfort over time.
BMW’s own test-drive notes also support that impression by emphasizing the car’s robust engineering and the way its drivetrain and chassis work together to deliver consistent performance. On the ownership side, free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles helps soften early running costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about higher ownership costs if you want a well-equipped example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-priced or heavily optioned car. Focus on condition, repair quality, and whether the equipment level matches the asking price. Because this model can get expensive quickly, you’ll want to make sure any cosmetic or mechanical issues are reflected in the listing price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 330i starts at a much lower price than the M340i, and the M340i adds a more aggressive appearance and a more serious driving character. The cabin also offers a range of interior colors and materials, so you should check whether the car you’re considering has the look and feel you want.
- Powertrain: The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine with 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, plus xDrive all-wheel drive, a rear M Sport differential, and M Sport brakes. It is the clear choice if you want the strongest performance.
- Safety package: BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The systems include lane-keeping assist, but BMW notes that smoothness can be inconsistent, so you should verify which package the car has.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system includes a touchscreen, natural voice recognition, gesture control, and the familiar knob and buttons. The touchscreen is easy to use, and the voice system can handle natural commands for navigation, climate, and audio.
- Fuel efficiency:
Which 2020 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2020 BMW 3 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 330i, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the value-minded choice if you want the core 3 Series experience without paying for the M340i’s extra performance hardware. BMW notes that enthusiasts would be quite happy with it while saving themselves about 10 grand, which makes it the smarter pick if you care most about balance and price.
- M340i: This is the trim to buy if you want the best driving experience in the lineup. It adds the turbocharged inline-6, xDrive, M Sport differential, M Sport brakes, and the most enthusiastic chassis tuning, making it the clear best-value choice for buyers who prioritize performance.
BMW says you need the available Driving Assistance packages to get all of its latest advanced safety systems.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,500 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,619.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $23,961 sits slightly below last year's $25,651.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year desirability.
Because the 3 Series still has strong enthusiast appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than ordinary sedans. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.14/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 BMW 3 Series safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 3 Series a Top Safety Pick+ rating when equipped with the adaptive full LED headlights.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW says you need two Driving Assistance option packages to get all of its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. The systems proved accurate in testing, but BMW also notes that smoothness can be inconsistent, and the lane-keeping assist can feel abrupt. That means you should pay close attention to which safety equipment is installed on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2020 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.14/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- BMW says the M340i proves there is substance behind the brand’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $20,634, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,961 average.
- It is a trim, athletic, premium sport sedan with improved software.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,482, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,961 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid and broadens the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of performance and current-market value, the 2020 is the one to target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2019 is the better budget path, while the 2021 makes sense if you want to pay more for the newer lineup and added hybrid choice.
