CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 104 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $14,354.00, 23.1% of 2019 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Hyundai Sonata 4.56 / 5 stars.
79.8% of 2019 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that leans hard into value, comfort, and equipment. It sits in the seventh generation, which was designed to be a tech-forward and efficient sedan with an affordable price tag, and that formula shows through in its generous standard features and roomy cabin. Buyers get a car that is comfortable and well equipped, with a smooth ride and a strong reputation among owners for fuel economy and interior space.
For 2019, the Sonata offered three main gas powertrains: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, a 1.6-liter turbocharged four with 178 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and a turbocharged 2.5-liter four with 245 horsepower and 260 pound-feet. The hybrid was also part of the lineup by this point, pairing a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 38 kW permanent magnet electric motor for 193 system horsepower. Standard equipment included an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports, SiriusXM satellite radio, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear seat reminders, driver-attention warnings, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
The 2019 Sonata’s appeal is easy to understand: it offers a lot of car for the money, and it does so with a long list of features that were still impressive in this generation. At the same time, it is not the most exciting choice to drive, and used shoppers should be aware that this generation has a mixed reliability record and is vulnerable to theft. Even so, for buyers prioritizing comfort, efficiency, and value, the 2019 Sonata remains a compelling used midsize sedan.

I really enjoy all the features that my sonata limited has. The interior layout is very intuitive and the materials feel premium. But the driving experience isnt quite as smooth. The base engines are all very lacking in power and leaves much to be desired. I put a ton of miles on my Sonata and have never had anything more than routine maintenance which still was few and far between.

Yes — the 4.56/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly highlight the Sonata’s excellent fuel economy, spacious interior, smooth ride, and generous feature content. That lines up well with the model’s value-focused, comfort-first positioning, especially if you want a roomy midsize sedan with a lot of equipment for the money. With 27.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have a meaningful chance to find a competitively priced example.
Is the 2019 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to a car that can be dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, with many drivers praising its reliability, comfort, and value over the long term. A few owners mention minor issues, so used buyers should still plan for a careful inspection and service-history review to reduce ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Hyundai Sonata?
At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks especially clean or unusually cheap. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s maintenance records support the mileage and asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Hyundai Sonata?

- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.04% compared with last year.

What is the 2019 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $12,979 sits slightly below last year's $14,269.
That softer pricing suggests the Sonata has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost gives you more room to preserve value over time, especially if you choose a clean, well-maintained example with strong equipment and broad appeal. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,041, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $12,979 average.
- It offers strong value with roomy comfort and a broad range of powertrain choices.
The bottom line: If you want the better balance of current pricing, owner satisfaction, and market availability, the 2019 is the stronger default choice. If your top priority is spending less up front, the 2018 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one with a clean history and solid maintenance records.
