Why it stands out
The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander stands out by making up for several shortcomings with up-to-date tech and safety features that modern buyers want. It is not at the front of the SUV pack, and it rides on an old platform that can be traced all the way back to 2005, but it still makes the most of what Mitsubishi has to offer by delivering the latest driver-assistance and infotainment technology.
That focus on current features is the Outlander’s main appeal. Shoppers may be willing to overlook its uninspiring interior and middling ride quality if they can connect an iPhone through Apple CarPlay. For buyers who value available technology more than polish or refinement, that tradeoff helps define what makes the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander distinctive.

Reviewed a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander on Mar 16, 2021
I like this car, it is a smooth ride, it looks fabulous on the inside and out. I believe it was a good value, for the money and very good miles. I really feel like I got a brand new car. The only thing missing was a restart, but I will be adding that soon. This is my 2nd Mitsubishi Outlander compared to the 2011, I can say that there are lots of improvements on body style, engine and features.

The Outlander’s appeal is that it gives you modern tech and safety features even though it rides on an older platform and isn’t the most polished SUV in the class. If you value Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and available driver-assistance features more than interior refinement or ride quality, it fits that use case well.
The market also shows 26.5% good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Outlander’s reliability story is helped by its practical, feature-focused design and its strong warranty coverage, which supports ownership confidence. The expert evaluation also points to a vehicle that makes the most of its available technology, even if the platform itself is older and the driving experience is not especially refined.
Its 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty is a meaningful ownership perk, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear may show up sooner in comfort and drivability than in the core powertrain.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander?
At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with added equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re looking at.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base ES comes with 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped shift knob, a 7-inch touch screen display, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, remote keyless entry, and dual-zone climate control. Higher trims add features like fog lights, heated front seats, a power sunroof, leather seating, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and a power liftgate, so base-trim shoppers should check carefully for the equipment gaps that matter most to them.
- Powertrain: Most trims use a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The GT uses a 3.0-liter V6 with 224 hp and 215 lb-ft, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, a full array of airbags, traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, hill-start assist, and active stability control. The Touring Package adds forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams, so you should confirm whether those features are included on the specific vehicle you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The Outlander’s infotainment system includes a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. That combination is a major part of the model’s appeal, so make sure the system works properly and that the phone integration is intact.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine with front-wheel drive is rated at 25 mpg city, 30 highway, and 27 combined. The all-wheel-drive version is rated one mpg lower in each category, and the GT V6 is estimated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 22 combined.
Which 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander is offered in 5 trim levels: ES, SE, LE, SEL and GT.
Here's the short version:
- ES: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Outlander formula at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the most affordable way into the model, but you should only choose it if you’re comfortable giving up some of the convenience and safety upgrades found higher up the range.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds fog lights, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power sunroof, SiriusXM, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want the most important everyday upgrades without stretching too far, this is the trim to target.
- LE: This trim leans more into appearance and added driver awareness, with black exterior accents, black-painted wheels, power-folding mirrors, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. It suits you if you want a more distinctive look and extra safety tech.
- SEL: This is the more upscale mainstream choice, adding rain-sensing wipers, auto on-off headlights, chrome exterior accents, blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assist, a power liftgate, leather seating, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It’s the right pick if you want a more complete family SUV experience.
- GT: This is the range-topping trim, and it brings the V6, paddle shifters, LED headlights, LED fog lights, and a power sunroof. Choose it if you want the strongest engine and the most premium equipment in the lineup.
The Touring Package adds forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams, so it’s worth seeking out if safety tech is a priority.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 313 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,779.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander's resale value?
The current average of $11,074 sits slightly below last year's $11,655.
That softer pricing suggests the Outlander has been losing value, which can be a plus if you’re buying now but a headwind if you plan to sell soon. If you own one for several years, the current market position implies you should expect resale to remain sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment level. Well-kept examples with desirable tech and safety features should hold up better than stripped or heavily worn ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander safe?
In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration testing, the Outlander earned an overall five-star rating, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash testing.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a reversing camera, a full array of airbags, traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, hill-start assist, and active stability control. The Touring Package adds forward-collision mitigation, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.
The main caveat is that some of the most useful driver-assistance features are not standard on every trim, so you should verify package content carefully before you buy.
Should I buy a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 26.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2018 stands out for delivering modern driver-assistance and infotainment technology on an older platform, which makes it appealing if you care more about features than refinement.
The bottom line: You should focus on the 2018 if you want a used SUV with useful tech, available safety features, and a price that has already softened. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the current market gives you room to shop carefully and target the better-equipped trims or the lower end of the price range.
