CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Kia Niro

Summary
With 187 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,246, 29.4% of 2018 Kia Niros for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Kia Niro 4.5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Kia Niro stands out as a hybrid crossover that puts efficiency first without giving up the practicality buyers expect from a small SUV. Kia’s first dedicated hybrid, the Niro was designed to compete directly in size and performance with the Toyota Prius V and the Ford C-Max, and it was notable for its build quality. It also paired a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a 32-kW electric motor and a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, sending 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
For 2018, Kia added lane keep assist to the LX Advanced Technology Package, introduced the EX Premium Package with most of the Touring trim’s equipment, and made more features standard on the Touring, including a wireless phone charger and HID headlights. The Niro also offered useful tech for the class, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the base FE, a seven-inch touchscreen there, and an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation on the Touring. Fuel economy remained a major draw, with EPA ratings of 52 mpg city, 49 mpg highway, and 50 mpg combined on the base FE, while the LX and EX were rated at 51/46/49 and the Touring at 46/40/43.
There are tradeoffs, though. In testing, steering was vague and real-world fuel economy came in at 35 mpg. The cabin was also described as dated, even if the car’s overall appeal came from its efficiency, available features, and solid everyday usefulness.

Mileage was one of the most important things, and this has 49 or 50 combined! Unheard of for an SUV. It was so quiet. Shut the door and everything is shut out. Also comfortable. I was in a bad car accident, so a comfortable seat is important. Good visibility, and storage. I think its great!

I wanted a car that had much better gas mileage than my 2020 Nissan Kicks. My wife has a 2016 Kia Niro, so this was an easy choice to make. Im incredibly happy and satisfied with my 2018 Kia Niro, and I would recommend this vehicle!

How much does the 2018 Kia Niro cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,424 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,250 |
| Year-Round High | $13,052 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,724 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.36% |
Prices have softened 2.36% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 181 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare before you commit.
Is the 2018 Kia Niro a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, spaciousness, and quiet ride, and they also value the comfort and features that make it a practical hybrid SUV. If you want a small SUV-style hybrid that emphasizes efficiency and everyday usefulness, this model year fits that use case well. 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Kia Niro reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also describes it as a reliable hybrid SUV, with dependable day-to-day use and a reputation for being easy to live with over time. Some owners do note that build quality could be better than what you might find from certain rivals, so condition matters. For used buyers, that means your long-term ownership risk is more about individual vehicle history and upkeep than the model’s overall appeal.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Kia Niro?
At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of past repair work, since those details matter more when you’re shopping a used hybrid crossover.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Kia Niro?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 181 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.36% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 64.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,250, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Kia Niro's resale value?
The current average of $12,424 sits slightly below last year's $12,724.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition so you preserve as much value as possible. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Kia Niro or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $11,464, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,424 average.
- It offers a more comfort-focused, spacious hybrid package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and availability, the 2018 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Niro’s core efficiency-and-practicality appeal.
