CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda Civic

Summary
With 305 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $13,394, 21.6% of 2017 Honda Civics for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic 4.75 / 5 stars.
72.5% of 2017 Civic models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic stands out as a compact car that blends practicality with genuinely engaging driving manners. In the 10th-generation Civic hatchback section, Honda says the car earned wide critical praise for its handling, features, and practicality, and was considered a return to form after the disappointing ninth generation. It also notes that the hatchback arrived for 2017 after a 12-year absence from the U.S. lineup, giving this model year added significance for buyers who wanted the Civic’s utility in a more versatile body style.
For 2017, the hatchback came with two turbocharged powertrains and a useful spread of trims. LX, EX, and EX-L used a 174-hp, 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four, while Sport and Sport Touring got a 180-hp version of the same engine. LX and Sport came standard with a six-speed manual, with a CVT available on those trims and standard on the rest. Standard equipment on the base LX included automatic climate control, a rear-view camera, a folding rear seat, a four-speaker AM/FM audio system with a USB port, and a 5-inch infotainment screen, while available features included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot monitors, heated front and rear seats, navigation, and a moonroof. That mix helps explain why the car appeals to shoppers looking for a small car that feels well equipped without giving up everyday usability.
There are also a few reasons to shop carefully. The source says the 2017 cars have the highest volume of air conditioning failures, and the generation also has known issues with oil dilution in the turbocharged engines, fuel injector failures, a fuel pump failure recall, airbags that may deploy unintentionally during a crash, and sticky electric power steering. Consumer Reports rates reliability below average for hatchbacks built before 2020, and the 2017 to 2019 model years in particular log a high number of consumer complaints. Even so, the 2017 Honda Civic remains appealing because it combines strong efficiency, useful features, and a reputation for being a fun, economical daily driver.

Great value for the money. Practical but has all the safety and phone features we wanted. I also looked at Mazda 3 and the Corolla; this is better looking. Bigger on the inside than I expected. The 2.0 liter is not very fast, but adequate with good gas mileage.

How much does the 2017 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,467 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,869 |
| Year-Round High | $15,679 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,650 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.17% |
Prices have softened 1.17% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,728 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its reliability, great gas mileage, enjoyable features, impressive handling, and spacious interior. That makes it a strong fit if you want a compact car that works well for daily driving while still feeling practical and engaging. With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability, and reviewers also describe it as a car you can count on for everyday use. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and condition, since long-term ownership risk depends heavily on how each individual car was cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic?
At 46.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether the car has any accident, title, or recall-related issues. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership. It also makes sense to prioritize cars with clean documentation and consistent service history over the cheapest listing.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,728 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.17% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 46.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,869, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $15,467 sits slightly below last year's $15,650.
That kind of softening suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the key is to buy a well-kept example and preserve its condition, because cleaner cars tend to hold buyer interest better when the market is mixed. Strong owner satisfaction can also help support demand over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 46.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,924, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,467 average.
- It emphasizes thrift and dependability in a polished, refined package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of price, owner satisfaction, and shopping flexibility, the 2017 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and may be worth a closer look.
