CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Sedona
overall

Summary
With 331 currently listed for sale and an average price of $8,720, 31.4% of 2016 Kia Sedonas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Sedona 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
58.9% of 2016 Sedona models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Sedona stands out by blending SUV-inspired design cues with the utility and practicality of a minivan. Kia also gives the top-of-the-line SXL model the materials and features of a luxury car, which helps the Sedona feel more upscale than many family haulers.
That combination makes the 2016 Kia Sedona appealing to buyers who want minivan usefulness without giving up a more polished, premium atmosphere. It also earns a strong reputation on the safety front, with top-notch safety ratings adding to its appeal. The main limitation is implied by the comparison itself: even with its crossover-like styling, it remains a minivan rather than a true SUV.

The only thing this car is missing is full STOW & GO, Otherwise this van is SO much better than our 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan which we traded in on this Sedona. This has better brakes, seats, comfort features (power sliding doors etc.) Power drivers seat, Heated seats. This Van drives and handles more like a car, Tighter turning circle and more responsive driving, Which is good for people who CAN drive. This is a good buy.

How much does the 2016 Kia Sedona cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,737 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,722 |
| Year-Round High | $9,458 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,408 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.14% |
Prices have softened 7.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 324 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona a good car?
Yes — 4.5/5. The expert rating is 7.67/10, and the model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
The 2016 Kia Sedona blends SUV-inspired styling with minivan practicality, so you get family-friendly utility without giving up a more polished, upscale feel. The top SXL trim adds luxury-car materials and features, which helps the Sedona feel more premium than many rivals. It also brings strong safety credentials into the mix, making it appealing if you want usefulness with a more refined atmosphere.
32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sedona’s overview points to a vehicle that was designed to deliver practicality with a more premium presentation, and the expert review backs that up with praise for its overall balance of utility and upscale feel. On the road, the 3.3-liter V6 is described as strong and the 6-speed automatic as refined, which supports confidence in everyday use. The cost-effectiveness review also notes that the Sedona rates about average for quality and reliability, which suggests you should still shop carefully rather than assume every example will age equally well.
In some parts of the country, a free maintenance program is part of the deal, which can help reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that average ownership costs and condition can vary, so a thorough inspection matters more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Kia Sedona?
At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim example with more equipment. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the safety and convenience features work as intended. Because this model can be equipped with a lot of technology, it’s worth checking that every system operates correctly before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sedona ranges from L to SXL, and the upper trims add a more upscale feel with features like premium materials, larger wheels, and more luxury-oriented equipment. The base trim is the most stripped-down version, so you’ll want to compare it carefully against the better-equipped models if comfort and convenience matter to you.
- Powertrain: The Sedona uses a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The expert review says it has plenty of reserve muscle for passing and that the transmission shifts unobtrusively, while fuel economy is described as aligned with the EPA estimate.
- Safety package: UVO eServices includes teen-monitoring features such as speed, curfew, and boundary alerts. A blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL. The Technology Package for the SX or SXL adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
- Infotainment: Kia’s UVO eServices system uses an 8-inch touchscreen and includes connected services through your smartphone and Bluetooth. It also offers emergency calling, automatic collision notification, a parking minder, a Find My Car feature, a Jukebox music hard drive, USB ports, and Pandora Internet radio. The SX and SXL can also get navigation and a premium audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sedona averaged 22.1 mpg in mostly highway driving with a full load of passengers and 19.1 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2016 Kia Sedona trim should I buy?
The 2016 Kia Sedona is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SXL.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sedona lineup. It gives you the core minivan utility and the SUV-inspired design, but you’ll want to compare it closely against higher trims because the feature set is much more basic.
- LX: This trim is the first step up if you want more convenience without jumping too far in price. It’s also the trim where Kia’s UVO eServices infotainment system is optional, so it’s a smart choice if you want a better tech experience without going all the way to the upper trims.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful equipment while staying below the luxury-focused versions. It also makes the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert available, which is a useful safety upgrade.
- SX: This trim brings a more premium feel and adds the blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert as standard. It’s a good fit if you want a richer feature set and are willing to pay for it.
- SXL: This is the most upscale version, and it’s the one to choose if you want the Sedona to feel closest to a luxury vehicle. It gets the top-end materials and features, and it’s the trim that best matches the model’s premium personality.
The Technology Package on the SX or SXL adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Sedona?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right example.
- Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 324 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,722, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Sedona's resale value?
The current average of $8,737 sits slightly below last year's $9,408.
That price movement suggests the Sedona has softened enough to create a better entry point for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to protect value later. The model’s premium feel and family-friendly utility should help it remain appealing to shoppers who want a minivan with a more upscale personality.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Kia Sedona safe?
The 2016 Kia Sedona earns five-star ratings in every federal government assessment and a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA, and it gets the top rating of Good in all IIHS crash tests.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sedona’s safety story is strongest when you look at its crash-test results and available driver-assistance tech. UVO eServices adds teen-monitoring features, and the Technology Package for the SX or SXL brings adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. A blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert is available for the EX and standard on the SX and SXL.
One caveat is that the IIHS gave it only a Basic rating for frontal crash prevention, so you should pay close attention to whether a used example has the safety package you want.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Sedona or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 Kia Sedona stands out by blending SUV-inspired design cues with the utility and practicality of a minivan, while the top SXL trim adds luxury-car materials and features.
The bottom line: The 2016 Kia Sedona is the right pick if you want a minivan that feels more upscale than most and you value strong safety credentials, good tech, and a more premium cabin. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop this year confidently because the market has softened and there are enough listings to compare, but you should be selective about condition and equipment.
