CarGurus Analysis: 2014 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 51 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $7,177.00, 23.5% of 2014 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2014 Volkswagen Passat 4.28 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
64.7% of 2014 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan built at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee, facility and designed with American buyers in mind, which gives it a clear emphasis on space. It is also described as an attractive, composed sedan that aims to strike a balance between casual and classy rather than chasing an overly sporty or overly flashy image.
As part of Volkswagen’s campaign to target larger sales numbers rather than enthusiast drivers, the 2014 Passat is larger and tuned for a ride that should appeal to a broader audience. The available information also points to technology that any driver can appreciate, while owner feedback reinforces the car’s strengths in fuel economy, comfortable interior space, smooth handling, and value. At the same time, some reviewers noted missing features, conservative styling, and a lack of advanced technology compared with competitors, which helps define the Passat as a practical choice with a few clear trade-offs.

I love the ride and features of this car. Handles great and although the price of diesel is more, I know the mileage you get from a diesel is greater compared to gas. Love the leg room also, both front and rear areas.

I've driven a lot of cars and this is one of my all time favorites. The Passat TDI even as a base car comes nicely loaded, the SEL has some added luxuries that make longer drives even nicer. The interior has decent styling and comfortable seats. It's the type of car you can buy and really enjoy driving because it's not breaking your bank account to drive with either the payment or the fuel bill. I would recommend looking into this car if you're in the market for a sedan. Don't be afraid of diesel.

Unlike the pictures and the legality of the tinted windows was a suprise as well as a missing right mirror and many minor but important damages including broken windshield.

So far a total of four NMS Passats in the family. All TDI's. I think this says something. Some will take issue with the conservative styling compared to the flashy offerings of other makers. Some will disagree but I tend to believe the conservative style will age far better. Then being basically German and not Asian... It's one of those things you either appreciate or don't. If you appreciate engineering and build quality, then place the NMS up on a rack and do a complete inspection. There's a reason that a decade old VW will not be rusted out. There's also a reason that at 100k miles the TDI is just getting her first wind. It's really difficult to quantify the difference between VW and most other competitive vehicles but it's truly vast. Downsides? There are some for some types of owners. If all you ever do is climb into your car and turn the key, then perhaps the Passat in general and the TDI in particular may not be your best choice. My experience with many TDI's of different vintages is that they will not tolerate neglect. Have the proper maintenance done or do it yourself. Don't skimp and don't use cheap components. If you fail to keep up there will usually be a price to be paid somewhere down the road. The biggest con? Not opting for the TDI. It makes the Passat something very special.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car is priced near the low end of the market. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s features and equipment match what you expect from the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is described as simple but not spartan, with an upscale look, while the test model noted hard plastic and V-Tex fake leather; base-level equipment gaps matter because some desirable touches are not present on every version.
- Powertrain: You have multiple engine choices, including a 168-hp 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder, a 1.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder, a 3.6-liter V6, and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline 4-cylinder; the turbo and diesel versions deliver better efficiency than the 2.5, while the V6 brings the strongest acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, antilock brakes with hydraulic brake assist, a crash-absorbing front crumple zone, and an Intelligent Crash Response System.
- Infotainment: The tech setup includes Bluetooth, USB-connected device support, and smartphone music browsing, but the hardline iPhone connection and short cable are drawbacks you should check for in daily use.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-liter engine is rated at 22 mpg city/32 highway, or 31 highway with the automatic; the 1.8T is rated at 24/35, or 34 with the automatic; the V6 returns 20 mpg city/28 highway.
Which 2014 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Passat, but you should expect the fewest features and the most basic presentation.
- SE: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it balances equipment and price well, giving you a more complete everyday package without pushing you into the highest trims.
- SEL: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for additional comfort and technology features.
- SEL Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the most fully equipped Passat experience and are shopping for the richest feature set.
The safety content highlights a strong standard safety foundation across the lineup, so your trim decision should mostly come down to how much comfort, convenience, and technology you want.

One caveat is the backup camera interface, which is described as unnecessarily shrinking the screen and making the display less useful than it should be.
Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2014 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.28/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2014 Passat is presented as a larger, more composed sedan that emphasizes space and a casual-classy driving experience.
The bottom line: If you want a roomy midsize sedan with strong owner satisfaction, good value, and a softer used-car price trend, the 2014 is a sensible place to focus. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop this year carefully and use the market’s deal availability to your advantage, but you should verify history and condition closely before buying.
