Audi dramatically reshaped the A4 luxury sedan for 2009, creating a car that's not only longer (by four and a half inches overall) and wider (by two inches), but lighter and slightly lower as well. You can probably guess the results. Drivers and reviewers note that the A9 Audi A4 feels more firmly planted to the ground, with a better stance, more stability, and quicker acceleration, thanks to the use of ultra-high-strength steel that enables the A4's body shell to shed unnecessary pounds by 10 percent.

The A4 offers drivers a more balanced driving experience as well, since it rides on a new platform that moves the engine back by about five inches, so that it's now located behind the front axle, providing better overall weight distribution. In addition, the steering system has been redesigned for a tighter, more responsive feel.

Outside, Audi has made subtle yet significant changes to the A4's design, now highlighted by a longer hood, shortened body overhangs, and an overall sculpted yet sportier appearance. The distinctive deep-mouthed grille remains, and Audi has added LED running lights beneath the headlights.

Inside, the Audi A4 continues to set the standard for its class, according to drivers and reviewers. The A4's new longer profile results in more interior space, especially for those in the rear seats, and the seats themselves have been redesigned for better comfort. The dash and center console have been redesigned as well for better ease of use, and even the pedals have received a revamp, with better positioning. Audi has increased the A4's trunk space as well.

New features for the 2009 Audi A4 include Drive Select, which enables drivers to choose from three settings that make adjustments to the engine, transmission, and suspension to provide three different driving options -- Comfort, Dynamic, and Auto. The Comfort mode provides smoother shifting and a softer ride, while the Dynamic mode offers drivers a tighter, sportier feel that communicates more of the road. (Some drivers and reviewers do not recommend this setting over rough surfaces.) The Auto setting finds a common place between the two other modes.

Power for early trims in the North American market will be provided by a new 265-horsepower, 3.2-liter direct-injection V6 engine designed for fuel efficiency as well as high performance. Audi will also offer the A4 with a turbocharged four cylinder. The V6 links to a six-speed automatic transmission designed for smooth acceleration.

Most drivers and reviewers agree that the A4's refresh was a much needed one, given the competition in the entry-level luxury sedan class from both BMW and Mercedes-Benz. And most agree that the makeover results in an A4 that's even more competitive, particularly when it comes to the sedan's interior. Some question the A4's ride, particularly when drivers choose the Dynamic setting on Drive Select, but overall the 2009 Audi A4 receives high marks from drivers and reviewers.
