About 2008 GMC Canyon
Overview

A mid-size pickup for the everyday user, the 2008 GMC Canyon carries over from 2007 with few changes. It adds foglights and OnStar to its standard features. Available in either rear-wheel drive or on-demand 4WD with low-range gearing for off-road driving, the 2008 Canyon remains a popular choice for its brawny looks, yet car-like handling and comfort. The lack of a V6 engine limits hauling power (400-5500 pounds), but since it's aimed more at consumers than commercial owners, it performs adequately for everyday needs.
A wide range of trim choices come with three different cabin/bed configurations. Regular cabs are two-door and seat two on either front bucket or bench seats. The Extended cab features four doors, though the rear doors are small and reverse-hinged. It fits four, but the second row are more like jump seats. Both Regular and Extended come with a 6-foot bed. Crew Cabs have four regular doors and two rows of seats for 5 passengers. To accommodate the rear seat, the bed has been shortened to 5 feet. Regular and Extended are offered in WT (Work Truck), SL, SLE, and SLT trims, while the Crew only comes as an SLE or SLT. The bed features taller sides for more depth, and a two-tier system with a tailgate that folds out into two positions (flat or wheelwell level), allowing for loading of longer objects.
A 185-hp, 2.9-liter I4 is the standard engine, matched to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. A 242-hp, 3.7-liter I5 is available (standard on 4WD Crew Cab), but only comes with the automatic transmission. Equipped with variable valve timing, the 2008 Canyon achieves around 17/24 mpg, respectable for a pickup. All trims come with ABS brakes, dual front airbags, daytime running lights, 15-inch wheels, and a tire monitor. Side curtain airbags are optional, but with side beam protection, the 2008 Canyon earns four and five stars in crash tests. A Z71 off-road suspension package is offered for more rugged driving situations.
Consumers seem to appreciate the responsive handling, car-like feel, overall looks, and quiet ride. The major complaints focus on the lack of power and rigid seat comfort.
