Overview

There isn't much to change about the 2005 GMC Safari Cargo Van, a commercial hauler with 170 cubic feet of storage space. It is a functional van with the same dimensions as the Passenger Van, but without the second and third row seats. Available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the 2005 Safari Cargo has a towing capacity of up to 5400 pounds with the optional trailer hitch and can hold even more cargo with the optional roof rack. ABS brakes and dual front airbags are standard, with the option of a rear locking differential. The 2005 Safari Cargo earns average overall crash test ratings.
A 4.3-liter, 190-hp V6 engine and 4-speed automatic with a tow/haul mode powers the van, which also has around six inches of ground clearance. Features are kept to a minimum, such as air conditioning, a radio, intermittent wipers, and daytime running lights, but you can add more "luxury" items, including power features, a CD player, and keyless entry. Cargo access comes from a sliding manual passenger side door and dual rear doors with either a separate or fixed rear window.
Drivers like the room and engine power in the 2005 Safari Cargo, finding it more than adequate for towing as well. Unfortunately, front legroom suffered, and the 15/20 mpg disappointed most owners. 2005 was the last year for the GMC Safari Cargo, which was never quite able to compete with the Chevy Astro.
