Overview

After seeing how their competitors have maxed out passenger capacity in the competitive SUV market, the GMC Envoy followed suit with an all-new stretch version introduced for 2002. The Envoy XL comes in 4 trims: the XL SLE 2WD, XL SLE 4WD, XL SLT 2WD, and XL SLT 4WD. The model also sports a 4.2 L, 270 hp I6 engine with 4 speed automatic transmission.
All 4 trims have 4 doors, seat 7, and get 15 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. The main differences among trims come from a couple luxury and safety features. First off, think of the SLT's as a more refined version of the Envoy XL with its standard leather seats. In addition, the 2WD's give you optional traction control. Max towing capacity amounts to 5800 lbs. for the 4WD trims and 6000 lbs. for the 2WD's.
Overall, drivers feel that the GMC Envoy XL made a solid debut in 2002. They like the extra room and interior comfort that this full-size SUV offers. However, critics would like better gas mileage and better interior design to maximize passenger space. If you want a V8 powertrain, try looking at newer models of the Envoy XL from 2003 or later.
