Overview

A practical family sedan or commuter car that turns into an open-road speedster for weekend fun, the 2001 Audi S4 has the extra power and punch for those who feel restricted by the A4. A 2.7-liter biturbo V6 engine hits 250-hp, matched with a standard 6-speed manual or optional 5-speed Tiptronic. Low-end torque starts around 1850 RPMs. Sports-tuned suspension, shocks, and brakes, and performance tires distinguish the S4 from its sister sedan.
New to the S4 lineup in 2001 is an S4 Avant, a 5-door wagon that adds extra cargo space (63.7 cu-ft when rear seats are folded). It features the same engine as the sedan. Now even parents can have a bit of fun on the road and still feel good about buying a practical utilitarian family car. The trunk features a removeable cargo net and retractable cover. Roof rails adorn the top for extra storage options. With the quattro AWD, the S4 sedan always easily beat most SUVs for handling and all-weather performance, and now the Avant can compete on storage capacity.
Also new in 2001 is standard Electronic Stability Program in both trims. Though truly sporty in performance, its styling still screams sophistication. An understated exterior hides a luxurious interior with lots of standard features. Packages add on heated seats, sunroof, navigation system, and remote garage opener.
2001 S4 performance and handling tops the list of highlights for owners. The agile manueverability, tight cornering, precise steering, and low-end torque give drivers chills as they open the S4 up. Turbo lag is greatly reduced in these new S4s, so acceleration is quick. The ride is smooth, yet energetic. They also like the comfortable seats and interior and how solid the car feels. The 2001 S4 receives complaints about the small backseat, limited headroom, and button-busy dash. Incredible fuel consumption is a result of enjoying the turbo power, and some owners are disappointed with the S4's reliability.

2001 Audi S4 6MT Santorin Blue Pearl Effect w/ black Napa Leather.//Overall. This car was just understated beauty at its finest. Very quick, very sublime, very German. The classy exterior lines and the outstanding workmanship of the interior sold me immediately. //Performance. For inclement weather, you simply cannot go wrong with all wheel drive - and Audi has AWD performance nailed. The engine was strong enough, with little turbo lag and lots of torque down low. The only downside was there isn't really any reason to rev the engine beyond about 5500 RPM as the turbo runs out of steam by then. On long road-trips at highway speeds, this car really shines. Like most German cars, it gets more stable and responsive with triple-digit speeds. The brakes are quite good. The shifter was a bit notchy and clutch take-up tricky. I wouldn't want to drive this car in stop and go traffic.// Interior. This generation of Audis had some of the most beautiful interiors - ever. The Napa leather in this car is still my benchmark for automotive leather 14 years later...it was that soft, durable, free of blemishes and comfortable. The plastics, wood, metal and leather are all of the finest quality in these cars. The interior is tight though and the front seat bolsters can be a bit intrusive after an hour or so. //Summary. This was a great car brand-new, under warranty. I wouldn't recommend buying it used. My car was in the shop about six times in 15000 miles, so that didn't bode well for future reliability.

By far the best car I have ever owned. The interior is a very nice place to be the ride is sporty but not too hard. Acceleration puts a very big grin on my face every day.

I love the B5 chassis. However, I am an enthusiast who does not mind dumping money into one of these things. They are not incredibly reliable but with some mods this can be improved. The stock power is not really sufficient for a performance car, but there is a huge aftermarket segment devoted to performance modifications. The car's looks and features are great out of the box. Current prices are quite low, making it easy to snag one provided you have extra funding for repairs and mods.

I absolutely love this car! It preforms just like I thought it would, its smooth and fast. I had to replace the clutch but other than that I haven't had any issues with my Audi. The car is extremely fun!
