Overview

One of Kia's first two original vehicles in the U.S., the compact Sportage SUV is attractive to those looking for a sporty off-road vehicle that doesn't break your wallet open at the seams. It is available in either rear-wheel or part-time 4WD as a four-door base and upscale EX or two-door soft-top convertible. With low-range gearing, the 4WD Sportage can easily be taken off-road. The 2000 Sportage gets a new standard CD player for the EX, and a redesigned interior and center console whose top slides forward to reveal an armrest. Also new is a footrest for the driver.
The 2000 Sportage is powered by a 2.0-liter, 130-hp I4 and either a 5-speed manual transmission (standard on the base models and in the convertible) or a 4-speed automatic (standard in the EX). Rear seat space is limited in both two-door and four-door models, but the front leg and headroom is generous. Rear seats also sit up higher, providing good visibility for all passengers. The 25 cubic foot cargo space expands to 54 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Power features, intermittent wipers, two-wheel ABS, and a security system is standard on all of the 2000 Sportages, as well as dual front airbags and the unique driver's side knee airbag. 4-wheel ABS are optional. The EX adds a roof rack, rear window wiper, cruise control, and leather trim. Leather seats are optional.
Though the Sportage represents a great value for the money, making it attractive to those looking for fun on a budget, many owners complain of frequent costly repair visits, despite Kia's warranty program. The most common problems are with the 4WD failing and early brake wear. Other downsides include an underpowered engine, wind noise, a rattling rear hatch, and cupholders that block the air vents. Highlights include a sporty ride, off-roading capability, comfortable seats, and good maneuverability for city driving.

Had engine problem with it. Check engine light kept lighting up because 2 cylinder stop working (has 4 cylinder totals!). With two cylinders off, the sportage doesn’t have enough power to move, so if you slow down too much or stop before reaching your destination, you were screwed!!! Went to 3 different garage, the last one was the KIA dealer, and they couldn’t find the problem. Told me everything was fine when I went to go get it and I stalled 28 km after that. KIA can’t even repair their own vehicle. Do not buy a KIA unless you are ready to repair it yourself. Might have been a lemon because you see many in the streets working today, but you also hear a lot of people who have problems with it...check online :s

It's a tinkertoy. My wife even says so...ALL THE TIME! I bought it because I needed a car "NOW". But I'd never own another one. Next car I own WILL be AMERICAN, and diesel. In fact, I'd really rather it was diesel-electric. Detroit, are you listening?

Uh, thats just the vibe this car sends out. 2.0L I4 produces 130hp which doesn't sound like a lot but can get you an improper lane usage warning by fish tailing in some rocks and totally destory the rear ring gear. About 21 or 22 mpg. Just feels cheaply made, which I think it was. A good partical car if you are the only one using it. Has a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty which you seem to use quite often. Just a car that screams "BUDGET!!!". Not fun to drive unless it has snowed. This is were i guess it excells is in bad weather. I have never gotten into a accident when the weather is bad so i give it props for that, but everything else on this car is dull, drab, and just so uhh.
