About 1980 Volkswagen Jetta
Overview
Puzzled by the lack of popularity for its Golf, which was a big seller back in Europe, Volkswagen decided to turn the hatchback into a sedan and give it a propulsive name. Creating a sedan version of the Golf and calling it Jetta proved the right move, and today it is Volkswagen's best-selling car in North America.
It all began in 1980, with a choice of a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan. In two trims, the base and GL, the 1980 Volkswagen Jetta featured a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder, 78-hp engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. An optional diesel engine was also available, reaching 50-hp. A 3-speed auto tran was optional as well. The 1980 Jetta was initially built for those on a budget. Although costlier than the Golf, its roominess and seating for four made it a practical family car. Yet it was sporty enough to appeal to more than just economy-minded instincts.
Volkswagen engineering meant a solid, sturdy ride, with smooth handling and confident braking. The engine was durable, and if not super powerful, it was speedy enough to create a memorable driving experience.
