Fuel tank vent

Asked by robertbrown0319 Aug 15, 2014 at 09:03 PM about the 1997 Ford E-Series E-250 3 Dr STD Econoline Cargo Van

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Has a 3rd vent line that is not connect at
filler assembly. Seems to connect to some
vents on the fuel tank. Lately gas spits out
of this line when hot.  What are the vents
for? Do they fail? What is this tube for?

1 Answer

The vents are part of the EVAP for when you fill up, the air displaced goes in to a charcoal canister, the fumes are absorbed and purged by intake vacuum to be re-burned instead of coming out in to the air we breathe, the fumes are a known carcinogen. Not like the old days when pump nozzles had no rubber boot and the displaced air/fumes came right out in your face. They can get clogged. The charcoal can get saturated if canister is not purged and liquid gasoline can back up in to them
