red brake light comes on dashboard, book says it is a brake sensor, no ABS brakes

what is a brake sensor and what is cost to replace this or is it the brake pads?

Usually, the Red Brake Light comes on because of low brake fluid level. It's normal. It's an indicator that the fluid is low because the pads have worn down. You can top up the fluid and make the light go out but you need to check the wear of your pads very soon.
