in my '88 22r-engine, I failed a (Calif) smog with a reading of 2.7 for "CO", and the limit is just 1.0. WHAT could be causing such a Massively high level?

Carbon monoxide is produced when you burn fuel without enough air. Your engine may be running rich. Are the hydrocarbons also high?
