I have a 2010 Passat Komfort, the switch to open the fuel tank door will not work. How do I replace the switch myself?

pop it out with a screwdriver or pry tool, unplug old plug in new
I tried that and it doesn't "just" pop out. It is encased in a speaker cover "grid" and has a privacy (valet) lock in the same space.
try turning that valet lock to unlocked should work after that
it looks to be in the locked position from the picture sorry about that. try flipping it to locked and unlocked and see if maybe the switch works after that. other wise if it still doesn't work try opening the trunk and open the side wall look inside. the gas cap should be accessible from behind there and there is often a backup release there. other wise you may have to remove the inner wheel well and remove the lock pin. there is also the option of changing the switch. another option would be use a hard piece of plastic to pop the gas door manually open it at the lock for leverage.
