Hybrid battery failure

OK, have a friend with a 10 plus years old Toyota Prius .. just out of the hybrid
battery warranty... and Toyota can't help out..... question, replace the battery for
$3,000 on a car worth about $3 to $4,000 or what?? Hard to sell the car with a
failed hybrid battery.... my understanding is that the car won't run without it...
I'm thinking that my 9 years old Toyota Prius which is a 2009 model and still
under warranty is the next to go.... I have one more year under warranty....
What's the best plan for my friend and my car???
Normally, these cars get 300,000 miles... BUT, with only 76,000 miles on my
2009 ...is it better to sell now while it's working fine or take my chances later???

My 2009 is NOT for sale.....and it's worth about $6,500 with all the options... different situation than my friend's 2007 or 2008.. with more miles.. point is he's just stuck with the failed hybrid battery... sucks.

Mark, if you are not going to trade or sell your car then you'll have to buy a battery when it comes time, or sell it off and get a new car. It is all a matter of preference on what to do. I myself would look for a new one.

I looked at replacing entire battery on my 2007 Prius with 141k miles. Toyota dealer wanted $4500 -too expensive. Refurbished batteries & companies who come to you for mobile replacement had sliding scale depending on how much warranty you wanted to purchase, but there were some poor reviews & uncertainty about the condition of the replace the & service. I finally found a local place (Indianapolis) that I ended up using that just replaced the bad cells & I have warranty. It’s been 5 months and 6k miles later & car runs great. Very happy.
