Car won't start

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Toyota Camry 1997 has given  up on me. At first when i would try to turn
the car on nothing happened no noise the only thing that would turn on
would be all the lights and air and radio. The battery seems to be working
well. My boyfriend changed the starter but not there is only a small noise and
the lights still work but the engine still doesn't start. He ended up trying to
see if its the fuel pump and as he was hitting it i was trying to turn it on and
after several tries it turned on. I turned it back off and repeated the action but
unfortunately it does not want to turn on any more. I just want to make sure
that the fuel pump is what needs to be replaced or if it could be something
else? Also the car is in need of the  EGR valve which makes me wonder if
that could also be the cause of this whole issue?

If it doesn't crank, don't waste your money replacing fuel pump. fuel pump has nothing to do with it not turning over. Check the battery cables for corrosion and make sure they're tight, don't forget the one by the starter. If cables are ok, check battery voltage,it should be minimum 12.4. check voltage signal at the starter solenoid as you try to start it. If voltage is present and still doen't start, replace starter. If no voltage present, trace back to fuse, relay neutral switch or ignition switch.

The Starter has been replaced and the battery was tested both were good. But I will see if the fuse, relay neutral switch or ignition switch could be the issue. Would you have any idea why the car was able to start once while hitting the fuel pump? just wondering why that is.
