Do you have to change power steering pump when you change the rack &spin ion?

Asked by Bernina710 Dec 07, 2015 at 10:06 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Montana

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Pontiac Montana SV6and I was told on today that the power
steering pump had to be changed. The only problem that I'm having is that I
brought it to Firestone and they said I needed a rack&pinion but they
never mentioned a power steering pump after a full thorough inspection. And I
don't want to be had for something that I don't need.

The rack & pinion can be changed without having to change the power steering pump. They are connected by hydraulic hoses. They are separate assemblies connected by hydraulic lines/hoses. Try getting another opinion from a reputable mechanic and not a chain.
