2001 Ford Escort 40k miles in excellent condition is blowing very cold air for 15-20 minutes and then slowly moves to warm air. Has begun recently and the temps in Dallas are 100+. Again, 15+ minutes

the outside temp is some of the problem,since the change from freon to R134A I myself dont like it.dont get as cold.your problem sounds like the orfis tube is stoped up,is mainley a filter.is inside a line,not a bad job,but has to be done at a garage,the system has to be vaced down orfis replaced then recharged.$1,89 part causes this problem.
