A 2.7-liter, 200-hp V6 engine powers the 2000 Intrepid STD base model, which is more than adequate for family car trips or if you want to leave the kids at home and let her rip on the open road. A roomy interior and great fuel economy (19/29) means it's also a great family car.
New standard features in the Intrepid STD in 2000 include 16-inch wheels. This is in addition to already existing features like power windows and locks, tilt steering, and cruise control. A new optional feature is daytime running lights. Past options still offered are a power sunroof, power driver's seat, and keyless entry. Parents love the roomy backseat and huge trunk. They also love the engine power and speeds the Intrepid can reach. While road noise is a drawback, the biggest complaint is a faulty 2.7 engine, which tends to need rebuilding due to sludge buildup.

The 2000 Dodge Intrepid ED gets a new standard engine this year. Instead of the 3.2-liter, 214-hp V6, which is now an option, the ES comes standard with the 2.7-liter, 200-hp V6 and 4-speed auto tran. In keeping with its sportier image, it features fog lights, alloy wheels, ABS brakes, power driver's seat, keyless entry, and lighted entry all standard.
With room for five in bucket seats, the ES is luxurious, fun to drive, and practical for transporting kids. Options include daytime running lights, trip computer, garage door opener, traction control, and leather seating if you want to travel in style. Most owners opt for the bigger 3.2 engine option because of its awesome power and because the 2.7 has a reputation for problems. Comfort, easy handling, a spacious interior, and good fuel economy earn high marks. Maintenance costs are a big cause for disappointment.

It says it's a family car, but for those moms and dads who want to get wild on the weekend, the 2000 Dodge Intrepid has a new trim line, the R/T performance model. It is powered by a 3.5-liter, 242-hp V6 engine and AutoStick transmission, and it takes the family car to a whole new level.
The R/T turns the Intrepid into more of a sports coupe, a four-door one, that is, with a huge interior and 18.4 cubic feet of trunk room. It offers the standard features of the base and ES models, but adds high performance details such as 17-inch wheels, performance-tuned exhaust system, and sports suspension. Options include a power sunroof, daytime running lights, and keyless entry. Unlike the ES, the R/T does not offer an ABS option. Owners love that it handles like a small car, but accelerates like a muscle car. Some wish there were more options available.
